Both Manchester City and Chelsea unexpectedly fell victim to this pressure as they lost to Crystal Palace and Leicester respectively, leaving Liverpool 4 points clear at the top of the table as we head into Christmas.
Liverpool come out the other side of Christmas with a very winnable match against Newcastle, but then face Arsenal and Manchester City in 2 crucial fixtures. Jurgen Klopp knows that they need a win on Wednesday, and he will be confident in getting the 3 points right now.
Newcastle can hold no such claims. The Magpies do have a relatively good defensive record, but they have only scored 14 times at the other end and their goalless draw at home to Fulham was a dour spectacle of football.
I’m not expecting them to have much success at Anfield. Newcastle haven’t won there since 1994, and this Liverpool side have conceded just 2 goals in their 8 home league matches this season. Newcastle have failed to score in 7 of their 18 league games.
